LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Southern Indiana's Simon Rawnsley converted a fast break goal off a cross with just 30 seconds remaining in the game to propel the Screaming Eagles to a 3-2 win over Bellarmine University today in the men's soccer regular season Great Lakes Valley Conference finale for both teams.
The game came down to Southern Indiana (6-10-1, 4-9 GLVC) taking advantage of their opportunities and Bellarmine misfiring on many of their offensive attacks. The Knights outshot the Screaming Eagles 24-6 on the afternoon and had a 13-5 advantage on shots on goal.
Southern Indiana took a 1-0 lead at the 9:35 mark when Nolan Harvath collected a loose ball following a corner kick for an unassisted goal after it appeared that Bellarmine keeper
Zane Reifsteck had made a clean play on the corner.
The score remained unchanged until the 80th minute when USI's Michael Simcock unloaded with a hard shot from the right side of the box that found the back of the net.
Bellarmine battled back to tie the score at two, erupting for both their goals in a span of just 23 seconds as
Ross Hopkins scored an assisted goal then converted a penalty kick after a trip in the box was called on the ensuing possession.
Prior to the game, Bellarmine honored its senior soccer players. Receiving recognition were
Matthew Baumann,
Matthew Cannady,
Nicholas Derfler and
Nicholas Troiani.
With the loss, Bellarmine's final regular season record is 10-5-1, 8-5 (GLVC). The Knights will be the 5-seed in the GLVC postseason tourney and will travel to Kenosha, Wisc., to face Wisconsin-Parkside in their opening round game on Nov. 1.
