LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The Bellarmine University field hockey team fell to Lindenwood 2-1 as the Lions scored 5:39 into the "sudden victory" overtime period to escape with the win today at Frazier Stadium on Bellarmine's campus.
The Knights struck first, when
Emily West took a pass from her sister
Ellen West for the score off a penalty corner at the 21:57 mark of the first half. Lindenwood came back to tie it nine minutes later as Kayleigh Harrower got loose for an unassisted goal, and the teams went to halftime tied at one.
The second half produced no goals, although Bellarmine controlled the ball for the majority of the period. In the overtime period, during which teams pare down to just seven players per side, Lindenwood came out aggressively and got the game winner as Lauren Cato converted a great pass from Haley McCulluch.
Bellarmine held advantages in most offensive statistics, outshooting Lindenwood 15-11 and controlling a 12-5 edge in penalty corners. Lindenwood's goalkeeper Caitlin Erickson made eight saves to offset the Knights' offensive attack.
The Knights fall to 7-6 on the season, while the Lions improve to 4-5. Bellarmine now goes on the road for their next three games before returning to Frazier Stadium on Oct. 22 to face Centre College at 6 p.m.
