LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The Bellarmine University women's basketball team scored a 73-48 victory over crosstown rival Spalding in their home opener tonight in Knights Hall.
The Knights were led for the second straight night by senior Brittany Edelen, who poured in 20 points. Sophomore guard Kylie Brady added 17 for the Knights and Allison Matheis hit double figures with 11. The Golden Eagles were led by sophomore Kelly Harrod with 15 points and senior Jackie Skaggs with 13.
Both teams were playing for the second consecutive day after road games the previous night. Bellarmine traveled to Frankfort where they posted a win over Kentucky State, and Spalding lost in Lexington to Transyvania.
Bellarmine took the early lead and ran out to a 41-26 halftime advantage after holding the Golden Eagles to just three field goals inside the 3-point arc. In the second period, the Knights were able to extend the lead and coasted to the 25-point victory.
Tonight's contest was originally scheduled to pit Bellarmine versus Wilberforce, but the Ohio university canceled earlier in the day citing excessive player injuries as their primary conflict. Spalding agreed to take their spot just hours before the scheduled 7 p.m. tip.
Bellarmine's next game will be in 10 days when they meet Hillsdale College in the opening round of the Bellarmine-USI Classic in Knights Hall at 3 p.m. on Nov. 28.
