ST. LOUIS, Mo.—Whitney Tormoehlen had 10 kills for the match, but the Bellarmine Volleyball Team lost 25-22, 25-14, 25-20 to the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Friday night at the Mark Twain Building.
The Knights could only muster a .059 kill percentage, committing 22 errors on the night. Missouri-St. Louis countered with 39 kills and just 14 errors off 109 total attacks, producing a .229 kill percentage.
Contributing to the lackluster kill percentage for Bellarmine were the 13 blocks by the Tritons. UMSL’s Erin Higgins had a game high six assisted blocks, while Weslie Gaff roofed four of the solo variety.
Caryn Schoeff led Bellarmine with 24 assists off 83 set opportunities. She also paced the visiting side's defensive effort, assisting on three of the five total blocks in the match.
Libero Kaitlan Harris led the Knights with 15 defensive digs. Her counterpart, Carolyn Holstein, also had 15 for the Tritons.
Austin Ziegler was the only Bellarmine player with multiple service aces, with two. Paula Byrns added the only other BU ace.
The loss, coupled with St. Joseph’s College’s win at home versus Maryville University on Friday, eliminates Bellarmine’s chances for a berth in next weekend’s Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. The Knights (13-9, 6-7 GLVC) will conclude their 2009 season on Saturday with a match at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. First serve is at 4 p.m. in Rolla.
