NORWALK, Calif. (April 18, 2009)--Bellarmine University's track team sent six athletes to the Long Beach Invitational and came back with three NCAA qualifying marks and two school records.
Senior Katie Hickey continued her winning ways this year running away with the women's 5000m title at the Long Beach Invitational this past weekend. Hickey's time of 17:32.33 is an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and just missed the school record set by former All-American standout Meghan Crowe.
In 12 individual races, Hickey has finished finished first in nine of them and second in the other three. She is currently ranked second in the GLVC and No. 24 in NCAA DII for the 5,000 meters.
Sophomore Meghan Shagena finished fifth in the race with a personal best time of 18:07.14, which ranks her fourth in the GLVC.
Senior Kristen Geiger made a strong move late in the race to finished fourth in the 3000m steeplechase. Her time of 11:15.56 was her second best time and also a NCAA provisional qualifying time. Geiger is currently ranked second in the GLVC and No. 24 in NCAA DII.
Freshman Carissa Martin shattered the school record in the 800m, running 2:16.65 to break the old record by more than two seconds. Sophomore Kelsey Love ran 2:19.55 to set a personal best. Martin and Love are currently ranked first and fourth respectively in the GLVC.
Junior thrower Elliot Mattingly was disappointed after his 49.33m toss in the men's hammer, which is normally his strongest event, but rebounded nicely in the discus with and NCAA qualifying throw of 48.93m. Elliot is ranked second in the GLVC and No. 26 in NCAA DII.
