SAINT LOUIS, Mo. (Apr. 24, 2009) -- The Bellarmine University women's tennis team followed a familiar path today, one first walked by the men's team, as the ladies defeated Indy 5-4 in round one only to be toppled 0-5 by the Drury Panthers in the second round of the GLVC tournament.
Things started out well for the Knights in their first match of the day as they gained a 2-1 advantage coming out of doubles.
GLVC Freshman of the Year Rebecca Porter and teammate Emily Roebker triumphed at the 1 spot with an 8-6 win over Alena Perez-Majul. Sarah Roebker and Elizabeth Bohnert also gained a point with their 8-4 victory over the team of Megan Farley and Maggie Ashby.
The Knights and the Greyhounds split the singles matches as BU's top three players, Porter, S. Roebker, and Bohnert, all triumphed against their opponents. The 3-3 split gave Bellarmine the 5-4 victory and a berth in the second round.
The second round match, played at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, brought the Knights face to face with the #1 seeded, and 26th ranked, Panthers of Drury.
The Panthers lived up to their ranking as they raced out to a 3-0 lead, sweeping the doubles matches from the Knights.
Bellarmine was unable to turn the tide in singles as Drury won quickly at numbers 5 and 6. The match was brought to a halt and the Panthers were awarded the 5-0 victory.
The Knights still have some tennis to play, however, as they square off with Northern Kentucky in the consolation match of round three. With third place up for grabs, the two conference foes will hit the court at 8:30 a.m. on Sat., April 25.
