LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine Volleyball Team opened their 2009 Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule with a three-set loss to the University of Southern Indiana, 25-18, 25-17, 27-25 on Friday evening in Knights Hall.
The Knights held their own in the block department with the Screaming Eagles, totaling seven, compared to Southern Indiana's eight. Senior Kelly Krucki and freshman Whitney Tormoehlen led the way for Bellarmine with one solo and one assisted block each.
Tormoehlen also led the Knights in kills, with a career high 14. Her .370 attack percentage led all Bellarmine players. Junior Emily Beckman contributed ten additional kills, for a team total of 34 for the match.
Bellarmine led 21-16 in the third set before USI rattled off four consecutive points. Krucki put an end to the run with a solo block on Screaming Eagles' junior Brittani Oliver's attack. The set was deadlocked at 22, 23, 24 and 25 before USI recorded the final two points.
Senior setter Caryn Schoeff assisted on 25 Bellarmine kills for the evening, while her counterpart, Melanie Pund had 35 for the Screaming Eagles.
Oliver had a team high nine kills to go with 10 defensive digs for Southern Indiana, leading the squad in both categories.
The Knights get back to the floor on Saturday afternoon with a matchup against Kentucky Wesleyan College. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Knights Hall.
