INDIANAPOLIS--Bellarmine University's Rebecca Porter advanced to the quarterfinals in the 64-player field of the ITA regional tournament this past weekend in Indianapolis.
Porter, last year's Great Lakes Valley Conference "freshman of the year," won three matches, beginning with a 6-0, 7-6 (3) victory over Tabatha Simpson of Ferris State. In round two, Porter dispatched Grand Valley's Katelyn Schaffer 6-2, 6-3.
In the round of 16, Porter, who was the tournament's #7 seed, faced a stiff challenge from Darylann Trout of Grand Valley. The Bellarmine sophomore lost the first set 2-6, then fell behind 5-2 in the second. Porter fought off five match points by Trout en route to her 2-6, 7-5, (10-6) victory. "That was the most amazing display of heart and determination I have ever seen on a tennis court," Bellarmine head women's tennis coach John Mican said of the comeback.
In the quarterfinals, Porter fell to eventual runner-up and the #2 seed Katia Bon of Drury 6-4, 6-0.
The women's tennis team returns to action this weekend at the Ashland Invitational Tournament in Ashland, Ohio.
