LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The two sides traded one-set leads during the evening, but in the end, the Bellarmine University volleyball team suffered its first Great Lakes Valley Conference loss of the season in a 3-2 match against Rockhurst University on Friday night at Knights Hall.
The Knights charged out to a one-set lead, thanks to superb defense and aggressive attacking. Rockhurst stormed back to take the next two sets before Bellarmine rallied for a fourth set win, sending the contest to a decisive fifth set.
In the final frame, Bellarmine (8-5, 3-1 GLVC) had a 2-1 advantage before Rockhurst (14-2, 4-1 GLVC) rattled off the next six points and secured a lead they would never relinquish.
Emily Beckman led the home team with 21 kills, and added 12 defensive digs for her sixth double-double of the season.
Whitney Tormoehlen took top honors in the digs department with 13, while Kaitlan Harris contributed 12.
Alyson Harmeling recorded a career high 18 kills on 30 attacks for a .467 attack percentage, while Bailey BredenbeckCorp delivered 52 assists, one short of a career high.
Bellarmine returns to Knights Hall on Saturday for a match against Drury University. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
