Volleyball takes down Prairie Stars, ties school record for consecutive wins

10/30/2010 5:55:55 PM

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Bellarmine University volleyball team collected their second straight sets win in as many days after disposing the University of Illinois-Springfield on Saturday afternoon at the TRAC.

With the win, the Knights extend their win streak to eight matches, the longest such streak since the 1990 season and tied for the longest in program history.

The win also gave Bellarmine (16-8, 8-4 Great Lakes Valley Conference) temporary control of fourth place in the GLVC standings.  The top eight teams in the conference after regular season play concludes next weekend qualify for the conference tournament held the ensuing week.

"We came out and faced a tough environment," Bellarmine Head Coach Dan Palmer said following the victory.  "It's never easy to go into an opponent's arena for their Senior Day and play well."

Defensive digs were dispersed across the board in the match.  Nine different Bellarmine players recorded at least one dig, led by setter Bailey BredenbeckCorp's eight to go along with her 33 assists on 37 Bellarmine kills.

Emily Beckman once again led the offensive charge with 11 kills, while Krista Gibson was the only other Knight with double digit kills with 10.  Beckman had one solo block, and Gibson tallied two assisted blocks.

"Our offensvie attack has become more balanced.  We had great play from Paula Byrns this weekend, and we're looking forward to three big games this week," Palmer said.

Bellarmine looks to establish a new school record on Tuesday night as they host Georgetown College in Knights Hall.  First serve is scheduled for a special 7:30 p.m. start time.
