LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine University volleyball team had its nine-game winning streak snapped on Friday night in a four-set loss to the Missouri University of Science and Technology at Knights Hall.
Krista Gibson recorded a game-high 21 kills, while Emily Beckman had 10 kills and 10 defensive digs for her 14th double-double of the season.
Bellarmine (17-9, 8-5 Great Lakes Valley Conference) fell behind quickly in the match, dropping the first two sets, before a dominating third set looked to right the ship. Set Four saw six ties and a pair of lead changes, as the Miners (14-10, 7-6 GLVC) secured the match victory.
“We responded well after being in the locker room, but when the game got close, we stopped playing like ourselves,” Bellarmine Head Coach Dan Palmer said. “We're going to have to fix that for tomorrow.”
The Knights were plagued throughout the match by costly errors, especially on the service end. Bellarmine committed 11 service errors in the match, compared to seven for Missouri S&T.
Kaitlan Harris led the home team in digs with 16, and Whitney Tormoehlen added 11 to the Bellarmine effort. Bailey BredenbeckCorp assisted on 42 of 51 kills, while Paula Byrns tallied five assisted blocks.
Bellarmine concludes the 2010 regular season on Saturday afternoon with a match against the University of Missouri-St. Louis at Knights Hall. Before the 3 p.m. first serve, Beckman, Harris, and fellow senior Kaitlin O'Conner will be recognized for their contributions to the program.
