LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine baseball team fell 8-2 against pre-season No. 5 Ashland University in a chilly 2010 home opener on Saturday at Knights Field.
Two of the Knights players, Chris Wiedmar and Zach Blanchard, had multi-hit games, each going 2-for-4. Weidmar singled to center field in the third inning and singled to left field in the eighth inning. Blanchard doubled down the left field line in the seventh inning and singled to left field in the ninth.
Senior Ben Minard pitched a complete game for Ashland. He also went 1-for-4 with a walk from the plate in the game.
Bellarmine's Aaron Deatherage went 4.1 innings as the starter, allowing six earned runs off nine hits and three walks.
The Eagles were led offensively by centerfielder Austin Ritson, who went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in.
For the Knights, shortstop Patrick Brady and designated hitter David Weinstein each scored a run. Brady advanced to home in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI-single up the middle from first baseman Nick Riganti. Catcher Zach Blanchard singled to left field in the ninth, allowing Weinstein to score an unearned run.
Bellarmine returns for their second home game of the season on Sunday, with a doubleheader scheduled for noon.
