LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The Bellarmine baseball team split a doubleheader with No. 5 Ashland University today at Knights Field, winning the opener 6-4 and falling 11-7 in the nightcap. The Knights are now 3-7 on the season, and the Eagles move to 2-1.
GAME 1 BU 6, AU 4
Both teams got the offense going early as the Eagles broke out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first with the third out of the inning coming at home as centerfielder
Marty Roberts gunned down an Ashland runner trying to score from second on a single to center.
In the bottom of the inning, Bellarmine answered as leadoff man
Michael Morrissette singled and scored on a double by
Braxton Graven. After another double by
Patrick Brady, designated hitter
David Weinstein drove in two with a sharp single to right.
Ashland came back to take a brief lead with a run in the top of the second, but the Knights reclaimed the lead for good in the bottom of the third as Bellarmine plated two runs fueled by hits by Brady and Weinstein.
The Knights pitching staff held firm the rest of the way as Bellarmine won the 7-inning game 6-4. Freshman
Jason Sterrett got the start and picked up the win, and relievers
Samuel Robinson and
Cory Thomas were perfect for two and two-thirds. Thomas earned his first save of the season.
GAME 2 AU 11, BU 7
The Eagles took advantage of eight Bellarmine errors and scored seven unearned runs en route to an 11-7 victory.
The Knights had a solid offensive game with seven runs on nine hits as Brady went 3-for-4 and
Todd Duckworth added two hits.
Kyle Roden knocked in three in the Bellarmine loss.
Bellarmine returns to action on Tuesday as they travel to Harrogate, Tenn. to face Lincoln Memorial.
