LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A game-tying 25-foot 3-pointer by Allison Matheis followed by a layup by Jalissa Chatlos with just 2.8 seconds remaining propelled the Bellarmine University women's basketball team to an unlikely 64-62 victory over Missouri S&T in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game in Knights Hall tonight.
With less than a minute, the Knights had the ball down three when Matheis drained her game-tying shot with just 33 ticks left on the clock. After a Bellarmine time out, the Miners took the ball down the court looking for the last shot when Matheis came up with an errant pass and shuffled it off to Jalissa Chatlos, who drove all the way to the basket and made the game-winning layup.
After two timeouts were called, one for each team, Missouri S&T threw the ball in and then called one last timeout to be able to receive the ball at half-court. Struggling to get the ball in, the Miners got it to guard Brittany Percival, whose 30-foot heave at the buzzer was wide right.
Following the victory, Bellarmine Coach David Smith was happy with the win, but perhaps a bit exasperated with the game of basketball. “It's a stupid game,” he said. “We made a lot of dumb mistakes during the game but pulled out a win.”
All five starters scored in double figures with Chatlos and Kylie Brady leading the pack with 12 apiece. Brittany Edelen scored 11 points with Matheis and Destiny Mattingly each totaling 10 points for the contest.
The Knights yanked down 34 rebounds tonight against the Miners 32 while also leading in steals with 10.
Andrea Downs led the Miners with 20 points.
Bellarmine ran its home record to 9-1 on the season while improving to 13-9 (6-7 GLVC) overall. Missouri S&T fell to 11-10, (6-7 GLVC).
The Knights return to action this Saturday against Maryville in Knights Hall. Tip is set for 1:00 p.m.
