Knights split doubleheader with Patriots

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine softball team split a double-header with the St. Catharine Patriots on Tuesday afternoon, winning the first game 7-0 while falling 4-3 (9 innings) in the second game, at Knights Field.

 

Game One

 

The Knights broke open a close 1-0 game by rallying for six runs on five hits in the top of the sixth, started by Lauren Summe's towering solo shot to center field. In the top of the seventh, reliever Amanda Meyer retired the side in order to close Bellarmine's 7-0 victory.

 

Bellarmine was led by Summe who had two of the Knights' eight hits. Mariya Kobayashi, Jordan Basham, Megan Murdoch, Emily O'Bryan, Amanda Meyer, and Angel Zimmerman each tallied a hit for the Knights.

 

Casey Willardearned the win, pitching five innings while allowing no runs on two hits and recording six strikeouts. Meyer received the save after coming in the game in the sixth inning and allowing just one hit.

Game Two

 

The Knights entered the bottom of the seventh down 2-1, but a couple of Patriot errors allowed the tying run to cross the plate for the Knights and force extra innings. Both teams scored in the eighth to lock the score 3-3 and head to a ninth inning. St. Catherine rattled off one run on a sacrifice fly to centerfield to take the lead 4-3. Cynthia Brown started on second base for the in the ninth inning. After a strikeout, Summe sacrifice bunted Brown to third base. Brown then attempted a delayed steal after Basham walked, and was caught in a run down to end the game.

 

Zimmerman, Murdoch, and Casey Cleary recorded two hits for the Knights in the second game. Three Knight pitchers saw action in the nightcap. Meyer started and threw three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts. Kristin Gramling took the pitching duties in the fourth inning, going three and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on four hits and five strikeouts. Willard took the rubber with two outs in the seventh inning and pitched two and a third innings allowing an unearned run in each extra inning with two strikeouts.

Bellarmine takes the field again this weekend, hosting a double-header against the University Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday, Mar. 20 at Knights Field. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
