LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The Bellarmine University baseball team took advantage of two Grenadier errors to take an early 5-2 then coasted to a 12-5 victory over Indiana University Southeast this afternoon at Knights Field.
After IUS had taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, but Bellarmine scored five runs on just two hits in their half of the second. The Knights were helped along by IUS, which issued two walks and committed a pair of costly errors.
Designated hitter Kyle Lenn smacked a solo homer in the top of the third to get the Grenadiers to within two, but a four-run third inning highlighted by John Lyons' two-run shot to left center helped the Knights pull away.
Bellarmine improves to 11-15 on the season, while I.U. Southeast drops to 17-8. Bellarmine's Joseph Golemboski picked up the win as the Knights utilized six pitchers in the game. Adam Burton was the hard luck loser for the Grenadiers. The I.U. Southeast right hander surrendered five runs, but only one of them earned.
Offensively, Lyons led the Knights going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two runs batted in. Catcher Zach Blanchard also had a multi-hit game for Bellarmine. Lenn, Jeff Klump and Zach Maupin led the IUS attack with two hits apiece.
Bellarmine returns to action this Saturday with a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader against Kentucky Wesleyan. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. (EDT).
