CARROLLTON, Ga.—The Bellarmine University baseball team fell to 5-10 on the season with a pair of seven-inning losses to the University of West Georgia, 9-4 and 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at Cole Field.
Bellarmine built an early 4-0 lead in Game One, highlighted by left fielder Kalvin Scheler's RBI single in the second inning and first baseman Nick Riganti's two-run single in the third.
The Wolves responded with five runs in the bottom half of the third, then added three more in the fourth to put the game away. Designated hitter Michael Hornsby went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and an RBI in the contest for WGU.
Game Two saw both starting pitchers steal the show, as the two teams combined for just 10 hits. Bellarmine's Braxton Graven went 5.2 innings, striking out a pair of batters, and West Georgia's Cory Watts pitched a complete game, surrendering only one run off shortstop Patrick Brady's RBI ground out in the third inning.
Second baseman John Lyons was the only Knight to record multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-3 and scoring the lone Bellarmine run.
Bellarmine will look to put an end to the Wolves' three-game win streak, and avoid a West Georgia series sweep, on Sunday afternoon with a scheduled nine inning contest. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
