LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Bellarmine Knights defeated the St. Joseph's Pumas in a doubleheader, winning 2-0 and 6-5 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action this afternoon at Knights Field.
Pitcher Casey Willard took both wins for the Knights hurling a complete game in the opener and stepping in to bail the Knights out of a three home run rally started by St. Joseph's the third inning of game two. Willard totaled four strikeouts for the day and allowed no walks.
In the first game, Bellarmine held the Pumas scoreless while bringing in both of their runs in the fourth inning and totaling three hits on the game. Freshman Megan Murdoch ripped a double to center field, allowing senior Emma Raver to score. Sophomore Jordan Basham answered with a double of her own to left field, earning one RBI, which brought in Murdoch.
Game two showed the momentum swinging in the Puma's direction as they headed into the bottom of the third inning with a 5-0 advantage over the Knights. Bellarmine turned up the offense as they surged ahead with six runs scored on 10 hits by the end of the fourth inning.
Right fielder Raver singled to right field for her second hit on the day to knock in Emily O'Bryan. Raver reached third on a single from Lauren Summe (who led the Knights with four hits), and scored the winning run for the Knights on a single from Basham.
The Pumas made two additional hits, but scored no more runs after the game winning comeback from Bellarmine. Angel Zimmerman caught a pop up to close out the sixth inning and Murdoch stopped a grounder at first base for the final out of the game.
Bellarmine (19-29, 10-14 GLVC) will host University of Wisconsin-Parkside (19-13, 10-8 GLVC) for the final doubleheader of the season tomorrow at Knights Field, beginning at noon with senior recognition between games.
