LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine University baseball team avenged their two losses on Friday to the University of Indianapolis by winning a pair over the Greyhounds, 6-3 and 7-5, on Saturday at Knights Field to earn a series split.
Tied at one in Game One, Bellarmine exploded for five fifth-inning runs, highlighted by left fielder Braxton Graven's two-run RBI double, scoring centerfielder Patrick Brady and shortstop Michael Morrissette. Graven finished the seven inning contest 1-for-3 with a run.
First baseman Nick Riganti scored a pair of runs, and finished the game 1-for-1 with a run batted in and two walks.
Bellarmine starter Philip Forbis picked up the win, throwing five complete innings, and allowing one earned run off four hits. He also struck out three and walked two Indianapolis batters.
In Game Two, the Knights (16-19, 6-8 Great Lakes Valley Conference) took a commanding 7-0 lead through three innings, and led by four entering the top half of the ninth frame, when Indianapolis (19-11, 10-4 GLVC) scored a pair before right fielder Chris Ulrey was picked off first base with two outs to end the contest.
Second baseman John Lyons went 3-for-4 with a run scored to lead the home team in the hitting department. Morrissette, Brady, and Riganti all had a pair of hits in the game.
Aaron Deatherage earned his second win of the season after striking out seven batters in 5.2 innings. He allowed three earned runs off six hits.
The Knights return to the diamond on Tuesday for an intra-city matchup against Spalding University. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Derby City Field in Louisville.
