LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The No. 18 Bellarmine University men's soccer team raced by the Indianapolis Greyhounds 3-1 this afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
The Knights struck first when
Jordan Beckles (St. Louis. Mo., De Smet Jesuit ) took a header from
Bradley Barraclough (Lincoln, England, Lincoln College ) and ricocheted a shot off the right post and into the goal in the 27th minute.
Bellarmine took the 1-0 lead into halftime, but the Greyounds came back to tie it with 31:48 left in the contest as Bobby Adkins took a pass in front of the goal and lofted a shot over Bellarmine keeper
Matthew Soyka (Racine, Wisc., Case) to knot the score 1-1.
The Knights wasted little time reclaiming the lead as Barraclough took a corner and crossed it to a diving
Jordan Dellamano (Maryville, Ill., Collinsville), who headed it past UIndy goalie Justin Roberts for the 2-1 lead. Bellarmine added an insurance goal in the 87th minute when
Michael Whitman (Indianapolis, Ind., Brebeuf Jesuit) took a pass from
Matt Weston (Louisville, Ky., Kentucky Country Day) and blasted a shot from 23 yards into the right side of the goal.
Although Bellarmine outshot UIndy 18-9, the Knights held just an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal. Soyka had a good day in goal for the Knights, collecting six saves on the afternoon. His counterpart, Roberts, made five saves for the Greyhounds.
Bellarmine improved to 4-1-1 (2-1-1 GLVC) with the victory while the 'Hounds fell to 3-3 (3-2 GLVC).
The Knights go on the road later this week, traveling to Romeoville, Ill., to face Lewis University on Friday, then moving on to Kenosha, Wisc., to face University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday.
