LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The Bellarmine University men's soccer team posted a 2-0 victory this evening over highly regarded Tiffin in a non-conference game at Bellarmine's Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Senior forward
Bradley Barraclough (Lincoln, England) provided the Knights with both goals, one in each half as the Knights recorded the shutout in their season opener over the defending Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions.
"This was a good regional win," said Bellarmine Coach
Tim Chastonay. "I thought we were very good on defense tonight. They (Tiffin) had some pretty serious offensive threats, but I think we were able to take them out of what they wanted to do. Then, of course, Brad made two tremendous goals."
The Knights broke open a scoreless game in the 35th minute when Barraclough got out front on a break and beat Dragon goalkeeper Jeff Frish with a precisely angled shot from the left side of the box.
After taking that 1-0 lead into halftime, Barraclough connected again in the 55th minute as he headed in a corner kick by
Ross Hopkins (Skerries, Ireland) to conclude the game's scoring.
In a physical contest with four yellow cards and 24 fouls, Bellarmine outshot the Dragons 13-6 and owned 10-4 advantage in corners. Goalkeeper
Matthew Soyka (Racine, Wisc.) picked up the shutout in his Bellarmine debut. The sophomore, in his first season with the Knights after transferring from St. Thomas University, recorded two saves as the Bellarmine defense limited the Dragons to just two shots on goal.
Bellarmine travels to Owensboro to face the Panthers of Kentucky Wesleyan on Sunday in their first Great Lakes Valley Conference game of the season. Game time is set for noon (Central Time).
