OWENSBORO, Ky.--The Bellarmine University women's soccer team blanked the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers 2-0 this afternoon in both teams' Great Lakes Valley Conference opener at Horse Fork Creek Park.
Bellarmine (1-1, 1-0 GLVC) turned in an outstanding defensive performance, not allowing a shot to the host team. For the game, the Knights outshot KWC 12-0 and held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.
After heading to halftime 0-0, Bellarmine's
Alissa Reuther (Villa Hills, Ky., Notre Dame Academy) finally got the Knights on the scoreboard off an assist from
Adrianna Long (Solon, Ohio, Solon) in the 61st minute.
Allison Menchak (Troy, Ill., Triad) tacked on an insurance goal four minutes later to make the score 2-0.
The victory marks the first as a head coach for Bellarmine's Jonathan Velotta. The Owensboro native was named to head coaching position earlier this year after serving four years as an assistant coach at Bellarmine.
Kentucky Wesleyan falls to 0-1 (0-1 GLVC) on the season.
The Knights return to action on Friday, Sept. 10 as they host Northern Kentucky University at 3:55 p.m. in Owsley B. Frazier stadium.
