LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Freshman Krista Gibson led all attackers with 14 kills as the Bellarmine University volleyball team swept Kentucky State University 25-17, 25-19, 25-16 in their Knights Hall season debut on Tuesday night.
Gibson finished with a .571 attack percentage while also contributing on defense with six digs on the evening.
Fellow freshman Bailey BredenbeckCorp dished out 21 assists and four digs before being relieved in the setting position by Lauryn Hyman in Set 2. Hyman delivered 15 assists and a pair of kills.
The two teams were tied at 11 in Set 1 before the Knights scored six of the next eight points, and never looked back. The exact same scenario occurred in Set 2, and Bellarmine responded with five consecutive points, including three service aces by Paula Byrns.
Kaitlan Harris led all players with 12 digs, and Whitney Tormoehlen contributed eight kills.
Bellarmine returns to the court on Friday for a pair of games in this weekend's Northern Kentucky University Tournament. The Knights face California University of Pennsylvania at 11 a.m., then match up with Gannon University at 3 p.m. in Highland Heights, Ky.
