LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine University women's basketball team picked up a 71-61 victory over the visiting Rockhurst University Hawks on Saturday afternoon behind a balanced attack that saw four Knights score in double figures.
Bellarmine (8-6, 3-3 GLVC) jumped out quickly on the Hawks (4-10, 0-6 GLVC) as they built an early 9-3 lead and held Rockhurst to just 1-7 shooting to open the game.
The Knights played tough defense throughout the first half holding the Hawks to just 25.8% shooting and built a 29-22 halftime lead.
“After four games in seven days, you could tell that we had some tired legs,” said Coach David Smith. “I think
Betsy Goodin came back with another strong effort for us.”
Goodin, who had a career high 16 points against Drury on Thursday, got her first start of the season and finished with 13 points, three rebounds, and four assists.
Bellarmine kept a comfortable lead through the rest of the game shooting 54.5% in the second half that saw the Knights lead by as many as 20 points.
“Our young team is starting to improve and we are starting to take better care of the basketball,” said Smith. The Knights had a season low against the Hawks with 14 turnovers.
Allison Matheis finished with a team high 17 points, while
Kylee Hamilton and
Lauren Jones pitched in 10 points apiece.
Bellarmine will return to action on Jan. 13 when they host the University of Missouri-St. Louis for a 5:45 game in Knights Hall.
