LOUISVILLE, Ky.--With the rain pouring down, Bellarmine University's
Dan Schiavi rifled a thundering shot into the top right of the goal 2:37 into the second overtime to lift the Knights past the No. 4 Northern Kentucky Norse 1-0 in a men's soccer Great Lakes Valley Conference contest tonight at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
The Knights entered the contest with an uncertain future for the remainder of the season, as Bellarmine had yet to secure one of the eight spots in the GLVC postseason tournament. With the win, Bellarmine assured themselves a spot in the field and knocked NKU out of top spot.
The game was a hard-fought match that saw neither team create too many legitimate scoring opportunities with the number of fouls equaling the number of shot attempts. The Knights were whistled for 13 fouls while NKU racked up 18. Meanwhile, the Norse put up 18 shots and Bellarmine recorded 10.
Bellarmine keeper
Blake Hunter was credited with eight saves in recording his fifth shutout of the season.
With the win, Bellarmine improves to 10-6-1 on the season with a 9-5-1 conference mark. The Norse fall to 13-3 overall and 11-3 in the GLVC.
Bellarmine now must wait until all of tonight's GLVC contests are finalized to know their seed in the GLVC tournament.
