LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Bellarmine University softball team continued Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep over Maryville University at Knights Field.
Recaps of the two games are below.
GAME ONE - Bellarmine 2, Maryville 0
First baseman Lauren Summe's sixth homerun of the season gave the Knights breathing room in a 2-0 victory over the Saints. The solo shot off Saints starter Julie Jouglard to lead off the sixth inning sailed over the right field fence.
Casey Willard scored the game's first run one inning earlier. After doubling to right center with one out, and advancing to third on an Angel Zimmerman groundout, Caley Melton dropped a single on the shallow right field line, bringing her home.
Melton finished the game 2-for-2, the only Bellarmine player with multiple hits in the game.
Willard (W, 9-3) was also a wizard on the mound, giving up just three hits in a complete game effort, striking out six Saints, while walking zero batters. Jouglard (L, 1-5) allowed five hits and stuck out six for Maryville.
GAME TWO - Bellarmine 5, Maryville 1
Bellarmine plastered three runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning, capped by a Kaitlyn Morley RBI single to left field, driving in Megan Murdoch, who started the rally with an RBI double up the middle.
Maryville countered in the third inning, decreasing the Knights lead to 4-1 when second baseman Shelby Steinkamp drove in Molli Updegraff from third base. Bellarmine completed the game's scoring in the bottom half of the third, when Morley recorded her first homerun of the season with a shot to left center.
Murdoch and Morley each went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in. Summe continued her impressive hitting day with a pair of doubles in a 2-for-4 performance.
Willard pitched the first three innings of the game and allowed three hits and one walk. Amanda Meyer (W, 5-5) came on for the final four scoreless innings in relief, giving up four hits and striking out two.
The Knights (15-9, 4-2) return to the field Sunday for a doubleheader against the Missouri University of Science and Technology. First pitch is scheduled for noon at Knights Field.
