LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The Bellarmine University baseball team exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning then held off a Missouri-St. Louis comeback to win by the final score of 14-8 in a game that was a non-conference contest despite being played against a Great Lakes Velley Conference opponent.
The Knights got three hits apiece from
Braxton Graven, Sam Burke and
Cory Johnson to lead the hit parade for Bellarmine, which totaled 17 on the day. Knight third baseman
Zachary Blanchard drove in three runs on the day.
Bellarmine's
Matt Bayes pitched a solid five innings to earn the victory, and when he exited the the game, Bellarmine held a slim 3-1 lead. However, the game soon became anything but a pitchers' duel. In the bottom of the sixth, the Knights sent 13 batters to the plate as the home team scored 10 runs and nine hits with one UMSL error.
Then in the top of the seventh, two different Bellarmine pitchers failed to record an out before
Aaron Deatherage came in and eventually ended the Tritons' comeback bid after the visitors had scored seven runs on just three hits.
With the victory, Bellarmine evens its record to 10-10 while UMSL slips to 6-11.
Bellarmine is back in action Friday night as they host Southern Indiana for the first of a 4-game set. First pitch on Friday night is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the St. Xavier High School field.
