Sterrett's one-hitter leads Knights over USI

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Bellarmine University baseball team improved to 12-11 on the season after capturing two of three games played on Saturday against defending national champions University of Southern Indiana.

Bellarmine 4, Southern Indiana 3

In the resumption of the series opener, which was suspended in the middle of the eighth inning on Friday night, Bellarmine closer Phil Forbis came on in relief to earn the save, his fourth of the season.

Kalvin Scheler drew a bases-loaded walk to break a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning and complete the scoring.

The Knights got on the board in a hurry, as Braxton Graven drove in lead-off hitter Cory Johnson from second with a double down the left field line in the first inning. Johnson finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of runs.

Bellarmine built a 3-0 lead in the second with a Michael Morrissette RBI single, scoring Kyle Roden. Roden went 2-for-4 on the day.

BU starter Kyle Grana struck out three and walked four in 6.0 innings of work. Caleb Shelley retired all six batters he faced to earn the win (2-0).

Knights pitcher Jason Sterrett (3-1) threw a complete game one-hitter and struck out a pair of Screaming Eagles batters, despite allowing two earned runs in the seven inning victory.

Morrissette went 2-for-2 with a run batted in, and was the only Bellarmine player with multiple hits. Graven was 1-for-3 with an RBI double to left field in the third inning to put the Knights on the scoreboard.

USI's lone hit occurred in the fourth inning when Adam Enright singled on a line drive to center field.

Southern Indiana 20, Bellarmine 7

A fifth inning offensive explosion by both sides provided the bulk of the scoring in the afternoon finale. The teams combined for nine runs off eight hits, including five runs by the Screaming Eagles.

USI added three runs in the sixth, seven in the seventh, and three in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

Starter Ben Fuchs (0-1) allowed five earned runs off nine hits in 4.2 innings, but struck out four. Reliever Aaron Deatherage recorded a pair of strikeouts in 1.1 innings.

The Knights return to action for the final game of the weekend series on Sunday. First pitch of the scheduled nine inning game is slated for 1 p.m. at Knights Field.
