RENNSELAER, Ind.--The Bellarmine University baseball team took three out four games over host St. Joesph's over the Easter weekend. The Knights opened the Great Lakes Valley Conference weekend series splitting on Saturday (winning the opener 9-7 and falling 1-4 in the nightcap), and sweeping both games of a doubleheader today (8-7 and 18-4).
Bellarmine, winners of eight of their past nine games, improve to 23-17 overall and their 15-8 GLVC record keeps them in second place in the GLVC East standings. First place Southern Indiana is 20-6 while Lewis is in third with an 11-7 mark.
On Saturday, Bellarmine opened with a 9-7 victory as senior
Zachary Blanchard helped lead the way, going 2-for-4 with a homer and four runs batted in. Fellow senior
Braxton Graven also had a big game with four hits, three runs scored and two RBI.
In the nightcap, Bellarmine managed just six hits (two by freshman
Trevor Parsons) as St. Joseph pitcher Phil Trowbridge outdueled Bellarmine starter
Cory Thomas for the complete game 4-1 victory.
In today's action, Bellarmine posted seven runs in the last two innings to get the come from behind win.
Caleb Shelley got the win in relief of Jaston Sterrett, and
Phil Forbis struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to record his 11th save of the season.
In the nightcap, Bellarmine walloped the hosts 18-4 as
David Weinstein drove in five runs and recorded three hits. Right fielder Kalvin Scheler added three RBIs with a homer and a double. Bellarmine starting pitcher
Kyle Grana struck out eight in five innings of work while surrendering just two unearned runs.
Bellarmine returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Highland Heights to face Northern Kentucky in a doubleheader.
