LOUISVILLE, Ky. --- In an intense and physical game that featured 12 yellow cards and one ejection, the Bellarmine University men's soccer team fell 1-0 to the Rockhurst University Hawks on Friday night at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.
Rockhurst took the lead just 57 seconds into the game when Paolo Scoppola beat freshman
Blake Hunter to take the early lead. The goal would be all the offense that either team could muster up.
Bellarmine (3-2, 2-1 GLVC) had several chances throughout the game including at 39:46 of the first half when freshman
Jacob Kaye had a breakaway with only the goalkeeper to beat, but Rockhurst goalie Ryan Bass made the tremendous save to preserve the shutout.
The Knights had another opportunity ten minutes into the second half as Rockhurst was flagged for a foul inside the box. On the ensuing penalty kick, junior
Cole Page was turned away by Bass followed by three more shots, but none could find the back of the net.
Kaye had another breakaway with just under 10 minutes to play, but Bass again made an incredible save. For the game, Bass was credited with six saves to earn the shutout victory. Hunter made three saves for Bellarmine in the losing effort.
Bellarmine owned advantages in both shots (17-10) and corner kicks (10-7), but could not get into any offensive rhythm. Kaye led all players with four shots on the night.
Bellarmine has little time to look at the loss as they will return to action on Sunday afternoon when they host William Jewell College at 2:30 PM.
