LOUISVILLE, Ky. ----In their usual defensive fashion, the Bellarmine University women's soccer team put the clamps down on William Jewell's offense and received a goal from
Alex Kowalski to beat the Cardinals 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Bellarmine (5-0-1, 4-0 GLVC) keeps pace with Quincy for first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while William Jewell falls to 2-2, 1-2 in the GLVC.
Neither team could gain the upper hand in the early going as both defenses were locked in. Bellarmine constantly put pressure on WJC's Sarah Franklin, who went into the weekend tied for the GLVC lead in goals with six, allowing the forward to only get two shots on the day.
The scoreless tie was broken in the 40th minute when junior
Alex Kowalski scored her fourth goal in as many games when she sailed a shot over William Jewell's Kelli Sontag's head and into the net, freshman
Abby Janszen was credited with the assist on the play.
With the 1-0 lead, the Knights gave William Jewell little chance for the equalizer, giving up only two shots on goal to the Cardinals. In goal,
Amy Kunowski registered her third shutout of the season and 18th of her career.
The Knights return to action next Friday when they travel to Rolla, Mo. to take on Missouri S&T at 6:00 PM.
