TIFFIN, Ohio—The Bellarmine University women's soccer team opened their 2011 season by battling the host Tiffin Dragons to a 1-1 tie in double overtime.
The Knights owned a huge advantage in offensive statistics including outshooting the Dragons 30-6. However, Tiffin goalkeeper Lindsey Gallagher posted 11 saves to help her team salvage the tie.
Tiffin took a 1-0 advantage in games 23rd minute as Shelly Rogers got her shot past Bellarmine goalie Amy Kunowski.
Chelsea McCarty knotted the score at 1-1 at the 11:56 mark of the second half when she headed in a free kick off the foot of Lauren Triplett.
Bellarmine was credited with 18 shots in the second period, but only McCarty's header made it past Gallagher. In the first overtime period the Knights fired four shots, two on goal while the Dragons failed to get off a shot. In the second overtime session only Tiffin got off a shot and it sailed high.
As this was the season opener for both squads, Bellarmine and Tiffin share identical 0-0-1 records.
The Knights continue their road trip on Sunday with a noon game at the University of Findlay.
