Fourth year middle distance athlete,
Carissa Martin (New Albany, IN), had the weekend of her career, running a school best, and NCAA Provisional qualifying 4:57.09 for the mile run on Saturday afternoon at University of Kentucky's prestigious McCravy Memorial meet. Her mile effort came less than 16 hours after leading her teammates to yet another NCAA Provisional qualifying effort in the Distance Medley Relay (12:02.19) at Indiana University's Indiana Relays.
Martin, running the 800 meter leg of the relay in 2:16.0, combined with teammates,
Angela Musk (5:02.6/1600m),
Meghan Shagena (3:43.4/1200m), and
Kristin Hamrick (60.1/400) on Friday evening in Bloomington, IN to produce one of Division II's best Distance Medley Relay marks of the winter. The quartet's time for the NCAA Indoor Championship event currently ranks as the fourth best in all of Division II.
Junior Musk also added a school indoor best of her own on Saturday at the Kentucky meet, when she recorded a mark of 9:54.88 for 3000 meters (=10:38/3200m). Musk's effort easily surpassed the previous indoor school standard held by former All-American, Katie Hickey.
Shagena and freshman
Emily Frith (Stanford, KY) also contributed performances of note at Kentucky, running the mile in 5:11.26, and 5:11.30, respectively. Frith's effort was a personal best and a new indoor school freshman record.
"It was an exciting, though tiring weekend for us," suggested women's distance coach,
Kris Horton. "Carissa and Angela ran significant personal bests, and did it right on the heels of impressive relay efforts just the evening before."
