LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine University men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Southern Indiana in the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship tournament today, ending the Knights' season with a 10-5-3 record.
Southern Indiana, the tourney's No. 5 seed, got on the board just past the five-minute mark of the game when Austin Andrekus got off a pass from just outside the front, left of the goal to Jeffrey McClure, who headed it into the net's back right corner.
On a windy day at Bellarmine's Owsley B. Frazier Stadium, the Knights took advantage of playing downwind in the first half to outshoot the Eagles 7-3 in the first period but failed to get one past USI goalie Ben Dempsey, and Bellarmine when into halftime down 1-0.
The Knights, who were the No. 4 seed in the tourney, finally got the equalizer in the 49
th minute when
Robert Bowling converted a penalty kick following a USI foul in the box.
The USI duo of Andrekus and McClure again teamed up to provide the eventual game-winning goal in the 60
th minute as Andrekus fired a cross from near the right sideline and McClure again got a head on the ball to re-direct it just past Bellarmine goalie
Blake Hunter.
Playing with the lead and the wind advantage, the Screaming Eagles kept the offensive pressure on the Knights, evidenced by their 16 second half shots.
Bellarmine didn't go down without a fight, however, firing off three shots in the final 2:12, including a pair of scoring attempts that provided late-game drama.
Justin Klenke's shot with just 1:03 remaining deflected off the post, and
Kai Qualah's attempt with just 18 ticks left on the clock was denied by Dempsey, who collected his fourth save of the day to seal the victory for USI.
Southern Indiana, which improved to 11-6 on the year, advances to face top-seeded Rockhurst in the semifinals of the GLVC Championship on Friday. In the other semifinal, second-seeded Quincy faces sixth-seeded Missouri-St. Louis.
