Knights ready to kick off season as they host Robert Morris

2/10/2012 4:58:00 PM

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The “Kevin Burns Era” of Bellarmine University lacrosse officially begins Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Knights kick off their 2012 season by hosting the Robert Morris Colonials at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium.

Burns, named the Knights' head coach in August, will be making his NCAA Division I head coaching debut after serving as an assistant coach the past five years at the University of Massachusetts.

The game promises to be a tough test for the Knights' defense as the Colonials have led the nation in scoring for two consecutive seasons.  Last year, RMU put up 18 goals in defeating Bellarmine in Moon Township, Pa., by the final of 18-10.

The Colonials were a preseason pick to finish third in the Northeast Conference, and the Knights were picked seventh in the ECAC.

Robert Morris also has a first year coach in Andrew McMinn.  While he inherits a high powered offense, the Colonials' top three scorers from last year all graduated.  Bellarmine, on the other hand, returns 91 percent of its goal-scoring players as the Knights have a veteran squad with 18 seniors and 13 juniors on the roster.

Fans who can't make it to the game, can still track the action through “live stats” and video streaming.
