LOUISVILLE, Ky. --- For the second straight day, the Bellarmine University softball team rallied in game two to split a double header, falling to the Ohio Dominican 4-3 in game one then wining game two 4-2 in nonconference action.
Heading into Great Lakes Valley Conference play next weekend, Bellarmine moves their record to 7-7 on the season as Ohio Dominican's record sits at 3-3.
Game 1: Ohio Dominican 4 Bellarmine 3 (8 innings)
As was the case in yesterday's series with Ashland, mistakes cost Bellarmine in the early going when freshman
Kayla Padgett dropped a fly ball in the second to allow Kylee Crislip to move into scoring position at second. Next up, Brooke McCarty doubled to bring Crislip home for the 1-0 Panther lead.
The Knights took advantage of an Ohio Dominican error in the third as
Kelsey Hicks scored on a failed pick-off attempt to knot the score at 1-1.
In the top of the fourth, the Panthers plated two runs on a bases clearing double to right center to stretch ODU's lead to 3-1. Bellarmine answered right back in the bottom half of the inning via the long ball as catcher
Scarlett Powers hammered her second home run of the season to deep center to even the game at three.
Bellarmine had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh, but
Erin Sireno flied out to right field with runners on first and second to send the game into extra innings.
With a runner on third and two outs, ODU's Crislip found new life as Sireno failed to hold onto a foul ball while crashing into the fence. On the next pitch, Crislip hit a rocket to left center to bring home Caitlin Chaney in what proved to be the game winner.
Amanda Meyer pitched all eight innings for Bellarmine in the losing effort, giving up two earned runs on eight hits. Rachael Stanzel earns the win for the visitors, registering nine strikeouts in the game.
Box Score
Game 2: Bellarmine 4 Ohio Dominican 2
ODU struck first in the finale, plating one run in the first inning, again off the bat of Crislip.
Freshman
Kelsey Hicks tied the game in the second, brining home
Megan Murdoch from second. The Knights could have done more damage, but Powers was picked off rounding second to end the inning.
In her next at bat, Murdoch would single up the middle, being replaced by
Casey Cleary as a pinch runner. Cleary's speed was not needed though as
Madi Ratliff homered for the fourth time this weekend, this time to left field to take a commanding 3-1 lead.
The Knights tacked on another run in the fifth when Murdoch doubled to bring home Sireno from second. ODU would add a run in the top of sixth, but it would not be enough as Bellarmine would hold on for the 4-2 victory.
Freshman
Alicia Miller picked up her second win of the season, throwing 7.0 innings while striking out two.
Box Score
Bellarmine will begin GLVC play next weekend as they travel to Maryville on Saturday then follow it up with a trip to Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday.
