INDIANAPOLIS—The 2011-12 season came to a close for the Bellarmine University women's basketball team as the Knights dropped their opening game in the Scheels Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament to the Indianapolis Greyhounds by the final count of 84-56.

The Knights kept within striking distance over the first 16-plus minutes of the game, but Indianapolis closed the final 3:36 of the opening half on a 15-7 run and took  a 46-34 lead into halftime.  After the break, Bellarmine never mounted a rally and the host Greyhounds just kept extending their lead as the final score reflected the game's largest margin.

UIndy's Kristin Turner led all scorers with 29 points as she was on fire from long range, hitting five of six 3-pointers.  Kylee Hamilton came off the bench to lead Bellarmine with 15 points.  The Knights' Kylie Brady had an off game shooting the basketball, but tied a career high with seven assists.

Bellarmine struggled shooting the entire game, making just 19 of 55 attempts for 34.5 percent while UIndy was successful on 30 of 64 shots (46.9 percent).  The host Greyhounds also held a slight edge in rebounding at 36-34.

The Greyhounds came in the No. 7 seed in the GLVC tourney and improved to 18-9 on the season. Bellarmine, the No. 10 seed, fell to 13-14 on the year, marking just the fourth time in school history the women's basketball team has finished below .500 for the season.

Today's game marks the end of the career for Allison Matheis, who will go down as one of Bellarmine's best 3-point shooters.  Earlier this season, she broke her own record for most treys in a season and finished with 74 this year.  She finished third on Bellarmine's career list for most 3-pointers with 222.

Matheis, who wore No. 23 her entire career, finishes 23rd on Bellarmine's all-time scoring list with 1,033 points. The senior from Dubois, Ind., became the 25th member of the 1,000-point club during her last appearance in Knights Hall.
