Knights Even Record in Sweep

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Phil Forbis went six innings and allowed one unearned run to lead Bellarmine to a 12-1 win against Hillsdale College Sunday afternoon at Knights Field. The Knights (6-6) earned a three-game weekend sweep with the victory.
 
Forbis (2-1) continued a run of success with eight strikeouts, no walks and three hits allowed. Nate Grayson, Patrick Krumme and Ryan Dixon were also strong out of the Bellarmine bullpen. The trio did not allow a hit or run in three innings of work.
 
Hillsdale took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Mike Vanchieri reached base on a Graham Spencer error to start the inning. Matt Pochmara continued the frame with a single to left field. Both runners advanced on a groundout to Spencer, before Scott Lantis drove home Vanchieri with an RBI groundout to give the Chargers their only lead of the game.  
 
Bellarmine answered with a run in the bottom of the second. Phillip Leopold reached base on a one-out error, then was driven home by Spencer's double off the left field fence.
 
The Knights took a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the third when Andy Gehr's RBI groundout drove in Cody Scheler.
 
Scheler continued his success in the series with two hits, two runs and two RBI.
 
Bellarmine took control of the game with a pair of five-run innings in the bottom of the fourth and sixth.
 
Leopold started the fourth with a double down the right field line, before he was driven home on Spencer's groundout to short. Scheler delivered the key hit in the inning with a two RBI triple to the fence in right field. The Knights totaled three hits in the inning and took a commanding 7-1 lead.
 
Bellarmine sent 10 hitters to the plate in the sixth and added five more runs. Spencer earned his third RBI of the day with a walk and Gehr collected his second RBI with a single to left field in the sixth.
 
Leopold (three) and Eberenz (two) each had multiple runs for the Knights, who outhit the Chargers 11-3 in the game.
 
Bellarmine will try to extend a three-game winning streak Saturday when it hosts a doubleheader against Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent University of Illinois-Springfield. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
