Knights fall 12-5 to Butler

INDIANAPOLIS—The Bellarmine University baseball team stepped out of conference and even out of division for a game at Butler University today with the home team taking a 12-5 victory.

The hosts did not exactly welcome Bellarmine with open arms, instead the Bulldogs walloped the Knights with 10 runs in the first two innings.  Bellarmine stiffened, however, and outscored the “opposing BU” 5-2 the rest of the way.

The Knights got on the scoreboard in the top of the third when Phillip Leopold uncorked a solo homer to right, his third home run of the year.  The freshman out of Trinity finished the day missing only a double for the cycle going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Kal Scheler also had a 3-hit day and was also 3-for-5 with two RBI as the Knights outhit Butler 14-12 on the afternoon.

A total of 13 pitchers saw action as neither coach wanted to overwork a pitcher in a non-conference, non-divisional affair.

The game was a homecoming of sorts for Bellarmine Coach Matt Tyner, who last year served on the coaching staff for Butler.

The Knights return to action tomorrow when they host Campbellsville for a 9-inning game set to begin at 3 p.m.
