HARROGATE, Tenn.--The Bellarmine University baseball team saw a last inning rally fall just short, then came back to win the nightcap as they split their season's first road doubleheader with the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters, dropping game one 5-4 and taking game two 4-2.
GAME 1: LMU 5, BU 4
In game one, the home-standing Railsplitters opened the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the second inning, stringing together three hits and being helped along with a walk and an error.
Bellarmine got a run back in the top of the third when
Austin Crutcher blasted a solo homer to lead off the inning. Then, the pitchers took over as the game saw 11 consecutive batters retired.
The Railsplitters tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. Bellarmine kept battling, however, and scored twice in the top of the sixth as the Scheler brothers--Cody and Kal--both collected hits and scored to trip the lead to just two.
After scoreless bottom half of the sixth, Bellarmine mounted a two-out rally in the top of the seventh.
Cody Scheler drew a walk, and Mike Morrissette singled as did
Kal Scheler, which scored the younger Scheler from second.
Kal Scheler then stole second and Adam Gehr walked to load the bases, but
Phillip Leopold grounded out to end the game.
Nate Grayson pitched the first four innings for the Knights, and was the hard-luck loser after being foiled by unearned runs.

GAME 2: BU 4, LMU 2
The Knights struck first in Game 2 when
Kyle Roden hit a solo shot to left in the top of the second to stake the Knights to a 1-0 lead. The Railsplitters, however, recorded a homer of their own in the bottom half of the inning to tie the score.
Bellarmine struck again in the top of the fourth as Crutcher connected for his second long ball of the day, and the Knights took the 2-1 lead.
Both teams threatened but did not score in the fifth inning as Justin Stohmeier came on in relief of
Matt Bayes to help the Knights get out of a bases loaded and 1-out situation.
Bellarmine added two important insurance runs in the sixth inning as Roden's single knocked in Morrissette and Crutcher, who had both singled.
Closer
Cory Thomas came on in the seventh and recorded the save after balking in a run and surrendering two base hits.
Bayes, who gave up just two hits in four and third innings, picked up the win as the Knights improve to 3-6 on the season.
