SOMERS, Wisc.—The Bellarmine University baseball team scored a crucial road sweep of Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Lewis University today, winning 4-1 in the opener and taking the nightcap 5-2 with three runs in their final at bat.
With the pair of victories, the Knights move to 23-21 on the season and 15-13 in conference. The Flyers drop to 29-15, 18-12 GLVC. The sweep was a major step in getting the Knights into the postseason GLVC tourney, and could move them into the final wild card spot depending on the outcomes of other games throughout the league.
Bellarmine and Lewis battle again tomorrow with a doubleheader slated to begin at 1 p.m. (EDT).
GAME 1: BU 4, LU 1 (BOX SCORE)
Bellarmine starting pitcher
Kyle Grana tossed eight innings of shutout baseball and rang up 13 strike outs as the Knights rode the hard-throwing right hander to a 4-1 victory.
The Knights opened the game by scratching out a run on a pair of Lewis errors and a Philip Leopold RBI bunt single. From that point, Grana took over allowing just four hits and surrendering just two walks as he kept the Flyer hitters off stride for his entire appearance.
Bellarmine added a run in the sixth when
Cody Scheler singled was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Jared Forrest and scored on
Justin Eberenz's single to right.
The Knights stretched their lead to 4-0 in the top of the ninth after a Lewis error extended the inning and Bellarmine second baseman delivered a 2-run single.
Justin Strohmeier relieved Grana in the bottom of the ninth, giving up just his third run of the season when the first two batters he faced doubled and singled. The sidearm-throwing righty settled down and retired the next three batters in order to nail down the victory for the Knights.
GAME 2: BU 5, LU 2 (BOX SCORE)
Bellarmine opened the second game with three consecutive hits and plated two runs with RBI singles by
Kal Scheler and Philip Leopold.
As in the first game, the visitors from Louisville then relied on outstanding pitching. However, the Flyers ruined a shutout performance for Bellarmine starting pitcher
Phil Forbis, when they got to the Bellarmine hurler for two runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game 2-2.
The Knights answered in a big way in the top of the 7
th. Pinch hitter
Brian Hockman drew a lead-off walk, and Eberenz followed with a sacrifice bunt to move pinch runner
Kris Sipes into scoring position at second.
Michael Morrissette then got the go-ahead run home with single to center.
Bellarmine didn't stop with just one run. After
Kal Scheler was hit by a pitch, Roden knocked in Morrissette with a single, and Leopold added another RBI single to give the Knights a 5-2 cushion heading into the bottom half of the last inning.
Jason Sterrett, who had come on in relief of Forbis in the bottom of the sixth, allowed one hit but got out of the inning unscathed to secure his third win of the season.
