EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The Bellarmine University baseball team split a doubleheader with the host Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles winning game one 3-1 before falling 12-3 in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Knights scored all three of their runs in the first inning and held on for the win as junior
Kyle Grana pitched a 7-inning complete game.
Andy Gehr, Mike Morrissette, and
Brian Hockman drove in the Bellarmine runs as the Screaming Eagles pitching staff settled in and surrendered just three hits after the first inning.
The 3-run lead was more than adequate for Grana, who gave up just five hits and allowed just one unearned run.
In game two, the host Screaming Eagles broke open a tight game with a 7-run seventh inning, which saw the Knights use four different pitcher to try to slow the USI offense.
Bellarmine had jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two more in the third as Morrissette,
Kyle Roden and
Kal Scheler knocked in runs.
Southern Indiana struck back with a run in the bottom half of third and claimed a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth as first baseman Todd Martin connected for a 2-run triple to inflict the most damage.
Bellarmine starter
Jason Sterrett was charged with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth as USI took a 2-run lead. Facing just a 2-run deficit, the Knights failed to make a comeback before USI put the game out of reach in the seventh.
With the split, Bellarmine moves to 18-11 on the season with a 10-4 GLVC mark. Southern Indiana remains 1-game below .500 at 15-16 with a 6-12 GLVC mark.
