Knights falter against Lewis, drop doubleheader

4/7/2012 4:04:00 PM

LOUISVILLE, Ky. --- The Bellarmine University softball team dropped two Great Lakes Valley Conference games to Lewis University on Saturday afternoon, dropping game one, 4-2 and game two, 5-1.

A day after sweeping Wisconsin-Parkside, Bellarmine (24-20, 15-11 GLVC) drops consecutive games for the first time since being swept by UIndy on March 23rd. The Knights fall back into a tie for third place in the GLVC East with Northern Kentucky, one spot ahead of Lewis (22-21, 14-14 GLVC).

Game 1: Lewis 4, Bellarmine 2

In game one, a four run fifth inning by the Flyers doomed the homestanding Knights, who committed two errors in the inning to hurt their own cause.

Erin Sireno and Madi Ratliff had RBI singles in the first and second innings to put the Knights in control early on but as was the case on Friday, Bellarmine left runs on the bases, stranding seven runners in the first three innings.

Lewis made their move with two outs in the fifth, staying alive after Ratliff mishandled a grounder that would have ended the inning. The next five Flyers that walked to the plate came away with hits to propel them to a 4-2 lead that they would not relinquish.

Freshman Alicia Miller (13-12) pitched the full 7.0 innings with all four runs she gave being up unearned. Miller surrendered just her seventh walk in 162.2 innings this season to Jayme Hefler in the third inning as the lefty from Alexandria, Ky. leads the nation in fewest walks per seven innings.

Game 2: Lewis 5, Bellarmine 1

Lewis went up 3-0 in the third and Bellarmine could never mount a rally, dropping game two to Lewis, who extended their win streak to six-games.

Displaying their lighting speed, the Flyers led off the game with back-to-back bunts, two of the seven hits given up by starter Amanda Meyer.

With the early lead in hand, LU's Karissa Habel held Bellarmine hitless for the first 5.1 innings leacing the Knights little chance to make a comeback. Freshman Kayla Padgett broke up the no-hit bid with a runner on first, ripping a single to left field to put runners on the corner with one out.

Senior Cynthia Brown then drove in the Knights lone run on a fielder's choice to first base to bring home Kaitlyn Morley and bring hope to the Belllarmine dugout. That hope was squandered though as Padgett was thrown out at home on a Lauren Summe single to end the inning.

Box Score

Bellarmine will look to regroup on the road next week as they travel to Frankfort, Ky. on Tuesday to play Kentucky State. The Knights will be back at home next weekend for doubleheaders against Kentucky Wesleyan and Southern Indiana.
