INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference has announced the 2012 recipients of the GLVC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Sportsmanship Award for the spring season with the Bellarmine men's tennis and outdoor track and field teams earning recognition.
The SAAC Sportsmanship Award is determined by votes of the GLVC member institutions' campus SAACs. The committees select their top three choices in each sport and base their decision on their view of sportsmanship. Each team that received a first-place vote received three points, second place received two points and the third place received one point. The GLVC sponsors the award in each of the league's 17 championship sports.
The men's tennis award saw a tie for the first time in the history of the award. Bellarmine earns the honor for the second time while Quincy garners its program's first. BU went 10-10 on the year including an impressive win over Division I Western Kentucky. The Knights are led by head coach John Mican and All-Conference recipient Anton Rabinov. The Hawks of Quincy saw success this year as they went 9-7 on the year and qualified for the conference tournament as the West Division's fourth seed. The Hawks are coached by Bill LaTour.
Bellarmine and UW-Parkside tied for the men's outdoor track and field honor. Both teams received six points in the voting. Bellarmine placed third at the GLVC Championships and had 10 athletes earn All-Conference honors under the direction of head coach Jim Vargo. UW-Parkside finished eighth at the GLVC Outdoor Championships under head coach Micah VanDenend. The Rangers were led by senior Ben Orvold who earned All-Region recognition and qualified for the upcoming NCAA Championships.
Southern Indiana won the overall sportsmanship award, breaking a 2-year run by Bellarmine, which claimed back-to-back titles in the 2009-10 and 2010-11 years.
