The Hawks (the No. 1 seed in the West) jumped out with a solid opening set by limiting the Knights to a negative hitting percentage to post an easy 25-13 set one victory. Rockhurst posted five team blocks in the first set while recording 12 first set kills.
In the second set, Bellarmine (the No. 4 seed in the East) played toe-to-toe with the Hawks and successfully fought off one set point before succumbing by the final score of 26-24.
The Knights appeared to be poised for a comeback in the third set, taking an early lead and prompting Rockhurst to call a timeout to re-group with the score 13-9 in Bellarmine's favor. After BU extended the lead to 16-11, the Hawks came roaring back with an 11-0 run to take control of the game and pull out the 25-17 victory.
Bellarmine Coach
Jenni Grzebin finishes her first year as coach with a winning 15-14 record. She said she was pleased with her team's effort. "I thought those last two sets were really Bellarmine volleyball," she said. "It's the way we trained, and how we wanted to play." She added, "I'm so proud of our three seniors' leadership throughout the season. I think they've provided a solid groundwork on which we can build."
Rockhurst's Katie Loescher posted 14 kills to pace the Hawks. The Knights were led by senior
Krista Gibson with eight kills while freshmen
Madison Tinder and
Emily McDaniel had six apiece.
Setter
Bailey BredenbeckCorp recorded 26 assists as the senior finished her career No. 2 on Bellarmine's all-time assist list with 4,093.
Bellarmine's
Jaclyn Ohlmann proved why she earned GLVC Libero of the Year honors by coming up with a dizzying array of 28 digs in the three-set match. The junior from Louisville finishes her record-setting season with 710 digs. "She's a rock star," Grzebin said of Ohlmann. "The ball is dead, and she comes from nowhere and keeps it in play."
Rockhurst, which improved to 26-6 with the win, advances to face Indianapolis in tomorrow's semifinals.
