LOUISVILLE, Ky.—The Bellarmine University women's tennis team scored a 7-1 victory over the visiting University of the Cumberlands Patriots on Saturday at the Sport, Recreation and Fitness Center on the Bellarmine campus.
Bellarmine, which improved to 3-2 on the year, began the match by sweeping the doubles matches. Evann Waschuk and Hannah-Rose Hagan started out slowly at No. 2 doubles falling behind 4-1. However, their prowess as doubles players extraordinaire came bursting through as they reeled off the next seven games to win 8-4. At number three doubles Abby Day blasted six aces as she helped partner freshman Madeline Tucker pick up her first collegiate win with an 8-4 victory. Caitlin Hanley and Michelle McFerran looked strong in their debut playing the number one doubles spot for the Knights, taking an intense 8-5 battle.
"Our freshmen played extremely smart doubles,” said Bellarmine Tennis Coach John Mican. “They have a chemistry that is rare between two new players."
In singles, Hanley and McFerran each won hard-fought battles while Abby Dorton clinched the victory for the Knights with a 6-4, 6-1 win at number six. Hannah-Rose Hagan finished out the tally sheet for BU earning her 81st career win, which passes Bellarmine standout Elizabeth Bohnert for seventh place on the Knights all-time wins list.
"This match was a lot tougher than the final score might indicate as the Patriots fought to the very end,” Mican said.
