LOUISVILLE, Ky.--- The Bellarmine University men's soccer team won their annual Spring Tournament on Sunday afternoon while using the event to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
The Knights picked up shutout wins over Spalding University and Centre College in the tournament which was free to the public. However, spectators were asked to make a donation to the foundation which grants wishes to kids with terminal illnesses. Through the event, the Knights were able to raise over $300 for Make-A-Wish.
“It was great to get two results against two very good teams, but the donations that were raised for the Make-A-Wish Foundation was the focal point of the day,” said Coach
Tim Chastonay. “We'd like to extend a thank you to Centre, Georgetown, Spalding, and their fans for being part of this event in support of a fantastic cause.”
In the opener the Knights dispatched Spalding 2-0 behind goals from sophomore
Phil Gangloff and junior
Austin Chitwood. Gangloff opened the scoring in the first half after a great service from fellow sophomore
Jacob Kaye before Chitwood added an insurance goal midway through the second half, when
Andy Diehl-Selk's cross found Chitwood at the back post.
In the final game of the round-robin tournament, Bellarmine defeated the Colonels of Centre College 1-0 after senior defender
Matt Odem converted a penalty kick in the 2nd half.
Chastonay added, “We were able to play two completely different line-ups in each game, and we were very pleased with the performances that each group displayed.”
