Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—Bellarmine University had its six-game winning streak snapped in convincing fashion as the Grand Valley Lakers overwhelmed the Knights by a final score of 18-1 in the NCAA Midwest Regional this afternoon at Meador Park.
Bellarmine starter
Benjamin Fuchs retired the first two batters he faced in leading off the game, but back-to-back doubles and a single to left put the Lakers up 2-0 after the first half-inning.
Knights leadoff man
Michael Morrissette started the game with a clean single up the middle, but that would be the last hit Bellarmine would register until the fifth inning.
The Lakers were ahead 9-0 after eight innings of play, then erupted for nine more runs in the top of the ninth. Bellarmine finally broke into the scoring column in home half when Philip Leopold singled home
Jes Staples to avoid the shutout.
In a game in which seemingly everything went right for the Lakers and wrong for the Knights, Grand Valley finished with 24 hits while the Knights only managed six—two by third baseman
Cole Metcalfe.
Grand Valley (34-16) advances to tomorrow's championship game(s), and Bellarmine (31-22) will face the winner of the Lewis-Ashland game at 8 p.m. (7 p.m. CDT).
