Box Score 2 PEORIA, Ill. --- A pair of walk-off hits did the Bellarmine University softball team in on Saturday afternoon as they were eliminated from the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
The Knights end their season at 28-26 overall and 20-15 in the GLVC.
Game One: #4 Lewis 5, #5 Bellarmine 4
Senior
Madi Ratliff broke the program's single-season school record for home runs by belting a two-run homer in the top of the second to give the Knights a 2-0 lead. Her 14th of the 2013 season, Ratliff surpasses classmate
Megan Murdoch who owned the record for one year after hitting 13 last season.
The lead was short lived though as Lewis countered in the bottom of the 2nd with a three run home run by third basemen Jessica Rourke to go ahead 3-2. After the blast, Coach
Renee Hicks made a pitching change, bringing in freshman sensation
Ally Foster from centerfield into the circle.
Foster took over the game from there, retiring the first 10 batters she saw and hitting a solo shot in the top of the 4th to tie the game at 3-3.
But the Christian Academy product got in a jam in the bottom of the 6th as the Flyers were able to load the bases with two outs. Alyssa Mosley hit a screamer down the left field line which Ratliff was able to knock down. The senior was able to keep the damage minimal, as Lewis was only able to plate one run on the play.
In the 7th, Lewis starting pitcher Kelly Bowler was able to get
Abby Lenhart to ground out to start the inning, but Ratliff homered for the second time in the game, hitting a shot to left center field to draw even at 4-4.
Bellarmine's upset bid wasn't meant to be though as the Flyers were able to get a walk-off single in the bottom of the 7th to advance.
Game Two: #8 St. Joseph's 3 #4 Bellarmine 2
Tabby Shewmaker drove in a pair of runs in the bottom of the 1st as the freshman from Harrodsburg, Ky. brought in Foster and
Kelsey Hicks to represent the Knights' only offense of the game.
The Pumas, last year's Midwest Regional Champions, plated one run in the 3rd and 5th to bring the game to a 2-2 tie. From there the game became a pitchers' duel as Foster and SJC's Sarah Franklin stymied the offense output, sending the games into extra frame.
St. Joseph's was finally able take the victory as Kylie Weeks hit a sac fly to deep center field in the bottom of the 9th for the game winning run.
While the program will lose Ratliff, Murdoch, and outfielder
Casey Cleary, the Knights will return Foster and catcher
Scarlett Powers, who both earned First Team All-GLVC East Division honors.
