LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Bellarmine University's men's basketball team has announced two more commitments for the 2013-14 season: Tanner Gibson, a transfer from University of Albany, and Nick Fredrick, an incoming freshman from Covington Catholic High School.

Gibson, who will have three years of eligibility, is a 6-2 “combo” guard that is expected to make an immediate impact.

“Tanner Gibson brings a true college body and winning game to our program,” said Bellarmine Coach Scott Davenport. “He has the personal pride you love seeing in a player on and off the court.  I was very impressed with his willingness and ability to be one of our guys right away.  His background is very impressive in preparing him to be a very successful college basketball player.”

Gibson is a native of Zanesville, Ohio, where he earned all-state second team honors from the Associated Press.  He also was named the Eastern District co-Player of the Year.  As a senior, he averaged 17.5 points, 3.5 assists and two steals a game while helping lead Zanesville High School to a 21-3 record.  He signed with Albany out of high school, seeing action in 24 games as a freshman.

“I'm looking forward to a fresh new start and just having the opportunity to get back on the court and play basketball for Coach Davenport and with the Bellarmine team,” Gibson said.  “I'd heard of (Bellarmine) and remember seeing them play in the national championship, so I knew it was a good program.  Then, when I visited I loved everything about the place.”

Fredrick is a 5-11 guard who helped lead the Colonels to a 27-7 record and a district championship.

“Nick Fredrick joins us from a tremendous high school program and a special basketball family,” said Davenport. “He is a true student of the game, and it shows! It is virtually impossible to teach the special toughness that Nick brings to our team. We are very excited and anxious to get the opportunity to coach him this fall.”

Fredrick's high school coach Scott Ruthsatz said Bellarmine is getting a player whose talent is on the rise. “Nick's best basketball is in his future,” he said. “He has taken his game to a new level the past two years.  He's always been a great shooter, but now he not only makes shots, but he gets others shots.  He also became our best guard defender.”

Gibson and Fredrick join the recruiting class of Rusty Troutman and Josh Derksen as newcomers to the Knights basketball team for 2013-14.
